A thin call echoes in silence
It is sweet in its asking
The listener
folded in memories of primordial time
a quiet wetland after rainfall
lunar mirrors over shallow lakes
singing for another to answer
It is a faith of ages
A bedrock of tolerance
for hissing freeways
ears behind brick and tin
The listener wonders what it is
not currawong or magpies of spring
nor stone curlews... masked plover among blades of winter grass?
Singular unequivocal to the eavesdropper on the edge of dream
Purpose full to be heard
Aware enough to remain unseen
